At this point in our semester we started student led art projects, of which this was the first. First we talked about a famous artist named Wassily Kandinsky. We talked about his life and saw some examples of his work.
We then went over the difference between organic and geometric shapes and added a couple different ones on our blank paper. Three of each to be exact. Then we draw a line down the middle of our paper to split the shapes in half giving us more shapes than we started with. We then used oil pastels to create some patterns in different shapes on our paper, these oil pastels would then allow the patterns to still be showing once we painted with watercolors. To add the water colors, the teachers played different instrumental music and we picked a color based on how that music made us feel and would paint a different shape. We continued this until all of our shapes and the background was painted.
A great integration activity for this project could be to have students draw different geometric and organic shapes like we did, however do this with a math lesson. Have the students draw different geometric shapes that you’re talking about in class and then they can draw some organic ones as well so they know the difference. If you want to extend it farther you can talk about dividing up shapes into equal pieces and use the center line to do that instead of just dividing your paper. However if you don’t wanna get that deep just have the students draw the different shapes and then continue on with the painting.
