Description:
On Dot Day, we have the privilege of listening to the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. In this story the main character Vashti didn’t particularly like art because she never knew what to make. Her teacher convinced her to simply draw a dot, and it inspired her to draw many, many different dots! She got very original with her dots.
During our time, we got the choice to either use a coffee filter or a plain piece of paper to create our own dot. When for creating our dot we had to try multiple different mediums so that we could be creative and try new things! I used the following mediums on paper:
- Oil pastels
- Crayons
- Watercolor paints and pencils
- Markers
Extension Activity:
When I would use this project in my classroom, would be during an elementary language arts lesson. I thought of this idea since we also used a story when we did the activity. I think the story really helped to understand why we were making the dots and would make students more confident if they believed they weren’t good at art either. This is a great extension activity to add onto reading a story so that students have an opportunity to be original and try new things that they haven’t tried before. A couple standards this would connect with could be 1-2.SL.5. Another option would be to make this into a writing prompt as well and have the students write about why they chose to make their dot that way and how it’s original to them. You could also have them write about the story along with this as well. That would connect more to standard 3-4.W.1.
