Starry Night Collages

Description:

We first were shown to a presentation and video on Vincent Van Gogh and then we got the opportunity to re-create his masterpiece, Starry Night, by following the steps below:

  • Step 1- Cut and glue using Mod Podge (if younger students, they can use Elmers glue) different colored pieces of tissue paper on to large, black, construction paper. Apply a total coverage layer of a gel medium and allow it to dry fully.
  • Step 2- Using oil pastels, create designs, swirls or shapes of color, like Van Gogh did, on the collage you created.
  • Step 3- We picked out any type of landscape, or background, and drew a silhouette of it on black construction paper. Finally, we cut out our silhouettes and used Elmers glue to glue it on to our background to create our very own Starry Night!

Extension Activity:
When I would use this project in my classroom, would be for an extension on a 3-5th grade Language Arts lesson. The students will first hear about Vincent Van Gogh and his life in a presentation and a video. Then they will also create their own Starry Night and write down three things they want to share with the class  that they learned about Van Gogh and his life. They will the present their starry night and what they learned about Van Gogh by orally presenting their facts and creation. This will tie the art project with the South Dakota language arts for speaking and listening, standard 3.SL.4, 4.SL.4, or 5.SL.4.
